My passion for people began in elementary school and was the beginning of an ongoing desire to empower others resulting in an enhanced quality of life. I always knew I wanted to serve people and I knew I wanted to own a business. I am thankful for the opportunity to gain the skills to make both dreams come true.
I graduated from Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi in 2006 with degrees in Social Work, Psychology and Spanish. My first professional job was with The Mississippi Department of Human Services (now known and Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services). I served as a Family Protection Specialist specializing in Foster Care for two years, followed by two years as a Resource Specialist licensing foster and adoptive homes and one year as an Acting Area Social Worker Supervisor overseeing investigation and foster care cases. I spent 5 years 7 months with The Mississippi Department of Human Services. My desire to become a LCSW and gain counseling experience led me to serve a little less than 2 years as a Mental Health Therapist with the MYPAC Program (Mississippi Youth Programs Around the Clock) at Youth Villages and Mississippi Children Home Services. I had a great opportunity to add Medical Social Work to my skill set when I worked for Fresenius Medical Care for a year and a half. I left Fresenius Medical Care in December 2015 and began my private practice. Renewed Minds opened for business in January 2016.
I completed supervision for my LCSW in September 2015 and received my LCSW in October 2015.
I have extensive experience in case management, licensing resource/adoptive home, supervision, community mental health and medical Social Work. Because of my extensive experience with The Mississippi Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children’s Services and community mental health organizations, I have acquired skills that prove to be beneficial in serving adolescents and families.
I take pride in serving my clients with integrity and dedication.
I am a divorced mother of two beautiful daughters: Miniya Asha Thurman is ten years old and Amare Riley Thurman died shortly after birth.
